Description
Deep Tissue massage is a form of massage that focuses on releasing the deeper myofascial restrictions of the deeper muscles, tendons and ligaments of the body.
This type of massage is a specific massage, which employs techniques to work below superficial connective tissue with the intent of breaking up of lactic acid, dead cells and toxins allowing free flow of nutrients and oxygen to the blood.
Deep tissue massage helps to free trapped nerves, oxygenate poorly circulated areas and allows the spine and joints to relax into alignment. It also promotes emotional release from the body. It will release chronic muscle tension through slow deeper techniques with direct pressure applied across the grain of the muscles to release muscular tightness.
Trigger Points:
These are areas of myofascial tissue (fibrous tissue that encloses and separates layers of muscles) where local circulation has been impeded to the point they are held in contracture. They can be intensely painful and can be the primary sauce of pain and highly recognised in nearly every pain problem. They cause headaches, neck and jaw pain, lower back pain, tennis elbow and carpal tunnel syndrome. They are the sauce of the pain in joints of the shoulder wrist, hip, knee and ankles. However, they can be released through Deep Tissue massage techniques.
Myofascial Release:
This is a specialised treatment that releases restrictions within the fascial network (connective tissue), enabling stuck, hardened and dehydrated areas to become more pliable, soft, mobile and hydrated again. Fascia surrounds and supports all muscles, organs and bones and entwines throughout the body like a spiders web. It is normally relaxed and wavy in its configuration and can stretch and move. However, if the body experiences any kind of trauma, either through postural poor habits, surgery, a car accident, a fall, physical or emotional trauma, inflammation or scarring, then the fascia will lose its pliability and can become hard, dehydrated and stuck. Facia responds to stress and will then lay down extra fibres creating thickening and adhesions both through and between muscles. This in turn leads to restrictions, limitations, of movement and poor tissue health. Myofascial Release techniques will focus on soft tissue disfunction, pain, tension and holding patterns that involves gentle sustained pressure for a period of minutes to allow the fascia to elongate and restore to a healthy position.
Both the above techniques work well together in the one treatment.
Deep Tissue massage can be of specific help to:
- Athletes or occasional sports enthusiasts
- Individuals with chronic joint or muscle pain
- Individuals with sports injuries
- Individuals with sciatica
- Individuals with scars from surgery (myofascial release techniques)
- Individuals that perform repetitive work that causes considerable strain on muscles and joints
- Individuals who suffer from stress
